1. Decide on its topic. The best articles are written about something that the author has a genuine interest about and knows lots of interesting information on.

2. Do research on your chosen topic and plan what you are going to say. You may want to make notes at this point too.

3. Do keyword research. This is essential to gaining more visitors. There are many free keyword suggestion tools such as 'Google AdWords'. These keyword suggestion tools offer a range of phrases that you could include in your article that people are searching for. Depending on which keyword suggestion tool you use, searches for the phrase you type in will often be shown 'daily' or 'monthly'. The better keywords you use the higher the 'Google Rank' is likely to be, so the more visitors you are likely to get.

4. Don't over-fill your article with keywords. Your article should still read naturally. Too many keywords crammed in an article can sometimes limit the traffic to your site.

5. Start your article with a point you would like to make. It should be something that grabs your reader's attention, like a question. In the introduction you should also tell your readers what they will find out from reading your article and how they will benefit.

• The following paragraphs could each start with a point you are making. The next few sentences could be providing more information about the point and going into more detail.

6. Keep in mind what you are writing about. Make sure you don't go off on a tangent.

7. Tie up loose ends. The last couple of paragraphs should tie up any loose ends and conclude what you have been saying. It may also be helpful if you just over your main point again.

8. Include the link to your site. At the bottom of the article include your link to your site. This is how you'll get more traffic. A lot of article directories will have a separate box for this link.

9. Proof-read and spell-check your article. Nobody likes to read an article that doesn't make sense and has loads of mistakes in.

10. One you are happy with your article, find an article directory that you can submit your article to. You will most likely need to create an account at the article directory.

11. Submit your article. Most article directories will need to approve your article and check it meets there guidelines, so make sure you have read their guidelines and conditions.

• If you make your article about an interesting topic, you are more likely to get more views, and therefore more URL clicks and visitors to your website.

• If you decide to submit your article to more than one article directory be sure to rewrite it before resubmitting. If it is exactly the same Google will mark it as 'duplicate content' and you won't get more traffic. You may also get banned from some article directories for breaching their terms and conditions on duplicate content.
• The article should also be in your own words unless you have permission to publish someone else's work.
