How to Save a Gif on an iPhone: 12 Steps

Graphics Interchange Format (gif) is an image format that supports animation and 256 colors. Its small size makes it suited to website use, logos and emailed graphics. On first glance, it may appear you cannot save gifs to your iPhone; however, you can do it in several ways with iPhone applications.

Method 1 of 2: Saving a Gif to the iPhone Camera Roll

1. Find the gif that you want to save. You can find it on a website, an email or a text message.

2. Tap on the Gif. You will see a box with an arrow pointing to the right in the upper right corner of your image. Click on this box.

  • If you do not see the “share” box, click on the gif again. It should appear.

3. View the list of options you have to share your gif. One of the options is to save it in the Camera Roll. Click on this option.

  • The Camera Roll can effectively save gif animations; however, you cannot view the animation in the Photos/Camera Roll app.
  • You will need to email or text the image in order to view the animation again.

4. Go to your Camera Roll. This is also the app labeled “Photos.”
  • Click on the Camera Roll folder to access your images.
  • Look at the bottom of your list of thumbnail images. You should see your gif.

5. Create another folder where you save your gifs. Return to the first page of your Photos app that lists image folders.

  • Click on the plus sign in the upper left corner to add a folder.
  • Type in the name of the new folder. Type “Gif” so that you can separate your gifs from your regular images and keep track of which photos are animated and which are jpg or other simple file formats.

6. Return to your Camera Roll folder after you have created the new folder. Tap the gif, then click on “Albums” at the bottom.

  • It will ask you if you want to save the photo to that folder.
  • Confirm the change of location.

7. Click on iMessage to text the gif, or click on email to email it.
  • You can send it just like a jpg file.
  • Once you send it, you can view it in iMessage or email, 2 Apple applications that allow you to view the gif animation.
  • Make sure your text recipient has iMessage or a similar program that supports gifs.
  • This method is best for anyone who is simply sending and receiving gifs on a regular basis. If you are creating gifs or working with them regularly, you will want to use the second method.

Method 2 of 2: Saving Gifs to a Gif Library

1. Go to the App Store on your iPhone.

2. Search for “Gif” in your app store search bar.

3. Scroll through the list of options. You will see several types of gif libraries.
  • Choose a library, like Relay, that gives you access to new gifs. If you like to send and receive gifs on iMessage, you can gain access to thousands of new gifs and save them in this app.
  • Choose a gif maker, like Gif Creator or Gif Animator, that helps you film and make homemade gifs from your phone.
  • Choose a storage app, like Gif Locker, that simply helps you store links to your gifs for easy sending and receiving.
  • These apps will usually cost between $.99 and $4.99.

4. Tap on the app you want to buy. Click “Install” and enter your Apple ID password.
  • You should read reviews for any app before you install it.

5. Launch the app. Use the “Import” function if it is available to save gifs that are currently on your camera roll.

  • If you are using a link-based service, get the link from iMessage or email and paste it into the program so that you can find it in the future.
  • Search for other gifs, select them from the app’s browser and select them to use them in iMessage or save them to your iPhone.
