How to SSH Your Own Webclip Icon Into iPhone Using Quirco.Com
So, you got that webpage saved to your home screen, but the icon is horrible and unappealing. Not only that, but your attempt to make it look better has now made zooming out every time you open it up a must, well look no further this tutorial will teach you how to fix those problems, and give you a nice shiny icon.
- This tutorial is for jailbroken devices only and is not an SSH tutorial, if you don't know how to use ssh then learn first, then come back to this tutorial.*
Steps
1. If you are complaining of having to zoom out every time you click on your page, then first delete it from your home screen and then re-save it completely zoomed outward.
2. Find an image that you want to use as your icon, of either your own or locate one through a web search engine. I'd recommend finding one of a higher resolution. This image will automatically be re-sized, but if the original resolution of your image is less than 57x57 or 114x114 (for iPhone 4 users). Then the quality will suffer. Save that image to your hard drive.
3. Navigate your browser to this address: http://www.quirco.com/iPhoneIcon/ This website has an excellent icon maker which uses the exact firmware that the iPhone uses for its icons. Choose your options.
- Note: The drop down shadow effect looks good sometimes, but sometimes not, choose what you like obviously. After making the icon download the one for your device.
4. Using your ssh program, navigate the filesystem of the phone to:/<root>/private/var/mobile/library/webclips here you'll find a folder or folders with a number/letter sequence for the title. Each one is its own web link, there will be one for every one you have added on your home screen. Find the one you want to change by opening the folder and viewing the icon.png file. Once you've found this, rename the saved icon to icon.png and replace it in the phone.
5. Edit the plist file within this folder as well. You should see one other file that is called Info.plist, right click and edit this file. Once in this file you must make only one change. The Highlighted area of this image is what you're looking for, directly underneath you'll see that it says false, but yours says true. You want to change this to false like the one in the image. Make sure it is exactly as follows: "<false/>". Save the file and you can terminate your session. Respring your device, and enjoy.
Warnings
- This works with IOS 4.0 and up. Might as well with older versions, but I'm not downgrading to find out. Confirmed with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Most likely the same with iPad and iPod touch if your using ios 4, but tread lightly while within the filesystem.
