How to Make a Good Record on a Mechanical Phonograph: 7 Steps

You've found an old phonograph that can both record and reproduce. Here is how to make about the best record you can.

Steps

1. If you have just got a hold of the phonograph, make sure all the parts function.

2. Replace the reproducing head with the recording head.

3. Take the blank record and slip it on the mandrel.

4. Wind the machine up about 8 turns, then start it.

5. Place the recorder on the left side of the record about 1/2 an inch from the side of the cylinder. You are now recording.

6. If you want to record talking, stand about 6 inches back and talk steadily into the horn. If you wish to play an instrument, stand about 2 feet back and then play with the hole in the instrument pointing into the horn.

7. When done playing or talking, brush the record with a soft brush ,replace the reproducer, and enjoy!

Tips

  • Violins don't record very well.
  • You should buy or make new blanks instead of using old ones.
  • This also works with the Ediphone, Dictaphone, Dictabelt, and pretty much any other mechanical recorder.

Warnings

  • DO NOT OVER WIND THE PHONOGRAPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Avoid touching the stilus.
