How to Make K9 Web Protection Invisible: 13 Steps
The trick featured in this article allows to run K9 Web Protection, a well-known filtering software, in stealth mode on a computer running Windows, as asked by many users here :http://@k9webprotection.uservoice.com/forums/84793-general/suggestions/1206557-stealth-mode-no-warnings-custom-block-pages-etc (remove the @ to access the link). There are no warnings when a page is blocked ; or you can custom the block page. Note that this trick might be against the program's terms of use.
Steps
1. First, download a utility called Resource Hacker (see this page :http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ ) and install it on your computer.
2. Open Windows's services command (just search for "Services" or type in services.msc in a command prompt).
3. Locate the Blue Coat K9 Web Protection service and stop it. You need administrator rights to perform this operation.
4. Locate the folder in which K9 Web Protection is installed. It is usually C:\Program Files\Blue Coat K9 Web Protection.
5. Right-click on the k9filter.exe file and choose : Open using Resource Hacker.
6. Browse into RCDATA until you find a file called BCHS_K9.JS. Double-click on it and choose the 1033 file.
7. Browse to the bottom of the file and add the following line directly after the ";" :self|window|document.location.replace('http://127.0.0.1');document.title="Chargement...";
8. In this case, I chose to redirect the blocking page to 127.0.0.1 , which will display a basic browsing error. You can replace it by any web address you want.
9. Compile the BCHS_K9.JS script and save the modified k9filter.exe file somewhere in your computer, on your desktop for instance.
10. Replace the old k9filter.exe file of K9's install folder by the new one.
11. Restart the Blue Coat K9 Web Protection service.
12. Wait a few seconds for the service to start.
13. Enjoy !
