How to Make It Appear You Are Hacking: 4 Steps (with Pictures)

Yes, not all of us have fast-paced hyper fingers that can crack computers in moments. However, have you ever wanted to make it look like you can do this to your friends? Read on for more information on how to make it appear you are hacking.

Steps

1. On Windows XP, simply go to Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and Command Prompt should be there. If not, go to Start, then Run..., then type in cmd.exe and hit Enter/Return. On Windows Vista, go to the button in the bottom left hand corner with the Windows flag. Then, type Command Prompt into the search bar. After a couple moments it should appear. If not, type in Run, click Run and then repeat what you do for XP.

2. If none of the above work, open Notepad. Type command.com and save as [Your name here].bat.

3. When Command Prompt pops up, simply type in: tree.

4. Enjoy the show! You will get a hierarchical 'tree' of your folders. It will appear that you are hacking into a computer system. This looks particularly good if your school/office uses a Novell or Citrix client.

Tips

  • Making a cyberpunk movie? This will be useful! Simply make cmd.exe fullscreen, then do as said above. You could have a blackhat hacker pretending to hack into Government files. There's a world of possibilities!
  • This is useful for pranks! Tell your friends you can access files quickly and easily. When they challenge you, blow their minds by typing in 'tree' and then moving your fingers really quickly on the keys to make it seem as if you are bypassing security barriers.
  • There is also a way to make it seem more "hacker-ish" by adding a thing called syntax attributes. The /f attribute makes it display even more text and the /a attribute replaces the lines with ASCII signs so to make it seem as "hacker-ish" as possible you should write tree /f /a and your friends will freak out even more.

Warnings

  • Likewise, doing this at work may get you fired. You have been warned.
  • It's advised you don't do this much at school. Your teachers know less about technology than you, and if worst comes to worst, they could call the police on you, thinking you really are a hacker!
  • If you are going to show this to your friends you should do it on a computer you haven't done it on before, because what the tree command actually does is that it uses indexation to the entire hard drive and displays all files in the index, which means that the more times you do this, the faster it goes and the faster it goes the less it seems like you are doing it.
