3 Ways to Jailbreak a iPhone/iPod Touch 2G

Want freedom with your iPod Touch 2G? Apple can sometimes put limitations on what you can do with your iPod Touch 2G, but jailbreaking your device can give you the ability to customize it and install apps that Apple didn't approve. Follow this guide to jailbreak your iPod.

Method 1 of 3: Before Jailbreaking

1. Backup your data. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes. Select your iPod from the Devices list in the left frame. In the Device Summary screen, click Back Up now. This will create an image of your phone on your computer, saving your settings, contacts, and apps.

2. Check your version. In order to perform the correct jailbreak, you need to determine which version of iOS your iPod Touch is running. Open the Settings app on your iPod. Tap the General submenu and then select About. Your iOS version number will be listed as Version. Follow the correct guide below for your version number.

Method 2 of 3: Jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPod Touch 2G

1. Connect your iPod touch. Your iPod should be connected to your computer with the power turned off.

2. Download the jailbreak software. Greenpois0n is a free, community-developed jailbreak program that automates much of the process. Download and extract the zip file from the website.

3. Run Greenpois0n. Click the Jailbreak button and then follow the instructions to put your iPod into DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode. The Greenpois0n program will provide a timer to help with the DFU booting process.
  • To put your iPod into DFU mode, start by pressing and holding your Power button for three seconds.
  • After two seconds, continue to hold the Power button and begin holding the Home button for ten seconds.
  • After ten seconds, continue to hold the Home button and release the Power button. Continue holding the Home button for 15 more seconds.
  • If you do not successfully enter DFU mode, you will need to start over. The timing needs to be close to perfect in order to successfully enter DFU mode.

4. Wait for the jailbreak process. After successfully entering DFU mode, the jailbreak process will begin. The progress bar in the Greenpois0n window will animate while the jailbreak process is underway.

5. Click the Complete button. After the jailbreak process is complete, click the Complete button and wait for your iPod to reboot. This may take a few moments. Once the iPod has reloaded, open the Loader app to install Cydia. Cydia will let you download tweaks and apps for your jailbroken iPod.

Method 3 of 3: Jailbreak iOS 3.x

1. Visit the JailbreakMe website on the iPod. The JailbreakMe process happens through the web browser on your device. Open Safari, and navigate tohttp://jailbreakme.com. Make sure that you have a stable wireless connection.

2. Make sure your device is compatible. If you do not have a supported device, the JailbreakMe website will inform you that your device will not work. If it is compatible, you will find the option to “slide to jailbreak”.

3. Slide the bar to start the jailbreak process. The jailbreak will download and install automatically. Depending on the speed of your connection, this could take up to five minutes or more. Once the process is complete, a message will appear on your device’s screen that says “Cydia has been added to the home screen. Have fun!” Press OK to return to your Home screen.

4. Reboot your device. This is not always necessary, but can help to work out any remaining kinks in the jailbreak process.

5. Browse Cydia for new apps. Cydia is the App store for jailbroken devices. It is not supported by Apple, but you can find a wide variety of apps and tweaks that you can apply to your jailbroken phone.

Warnings

  • Jailbreaking is considered a copyright violation by Apple and will void your warranty. Make sure to restore, backup and uninstall jailbreaks prior to having your device serviced by Apple.
